Vehicle color can affect safety

It was snowing and blowing hard today as we made our way into town.  Visibility was down to a few hundred feet and we were on our toes.

Suddenly red running lights appeared very close in front of us.  We could see no vehicle, just the dim spots of red light.

When we reached a brief break in the squall we realized we were following a trailer of some sort.  The trouble was the trailer was white and in fact we only determined it was a cargo trailer after we were stopped at a light.

There is no doubt that a white trailer will stay cooler but in our part of the country a white trailer, truck or car can be very hard to see in a white out, an occurrence that happens very often in the winter.

The trailer we were following was doubly hard to see as the lights were small to begin with and covered in snow.   It would have been better if the lights were bigger and cleaned off.

A white trailer can be more visible in snow if there are some type of dark colored graphics to break up the white or reflective tape on the bumper.

Had it not been for the lights, as dim as they were, we would certainly have plowed into this vehicle.
